Reincarnated Warrior: The Past Lives of General George S. Patton
General George S. Patton, known for his role in World War II, famously believed in reincarnation, considering it essential to his destiny as a warrior. Patton believed he had been a soldier in previous lives across many eras and battlefields, with memories stretching back to ancient times. This belief fueled his intense commitment to his role and fearlessness in combat. He claimed to remember past lives as:
1. A Roman Legionary: Patton felt he had served in the Roman army, marching with Caesar's legions through Gaul or fighting in North Africa.
2. A Carthaginian General: He sometimes referred to fighting under the Carthaginian commander Hannibal, particularly in battles against Rome.
3. A Viking Warrior: Patton also saw himself as a Norse raider or Viking, driven by the same fierce loyalty and warrior's honor.
4. A Soldier with Napoleon: Patton felt he might have served under Napoleon, reflecting the same boldness and ambition Napoleon inspired in his troops.
5. A Medieval Knight: He sometimes alluded to being a crusader or knight in the Middle Ages, with chivalric ideals about warfare and honor.
His belief in reincarnation and destiny shaped his aggressive tactics and bold leadership style. It also fostered an unwavering confidence and resilience, which made him one of the most audacious and successful generals of his time. Patton’s poem Through a Glass, Darkly reveals his views on war and reincarnation.
